Las Vegas is commonly known as “Sin City,” and many people take this to refer to the enormous presence of the entertainment and gambling industries. Unfortunately, there is a more sinister — and deadlier — side of Las Vegas that is often not talked about: the prevalence of serious car accidents that result in injury and death.
Las Vegas saw 12,720 collisions reported in 2016 (a 1 percent decrease from 2015) resulting in 217 fatalities across Clark County (an 18 percent increase from 2015). Despite efforts by the state to roll out the “Zero Fatalities” campaign, parts of Las Vegas remain dangerous to both drivers and pedestrians.
The figures on this page come from 2016 Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) records, the most recent data used when this page was compiled. For current numbers, see NDOT's Zero Fatalities resources.
Las Vegas' Most Dangerous Roads
Looking at areas with a high number of collisions resulting in serious injury or death gives insight into typical driver behavior, the presence of pedestrians, traffic volume and more.
| Name of Road | Number of Injuries |
|---|---|
| Interstate 15 – Northbound (IR 15) | 2,325 |
| Interstate 15 – Southbound (IR 15) | 836 |
| State Route 589 – Sahara Avenue (SR 589) | 631 |
| State Route 147 – Lake Mead Boulevard (SR 147) | 300 |
| Eastern Avenue | 262 |
| Name of Road | Number of Fatalities |
|---|---|
| State Route 595 – Rainbow Boulevard (SR 595) | 6 |
| State Route 596 – Jones Boulevard (SR 596) | 6 |
| State Route 159 – Charleston Boulevard (SR 159) | 5 |

Dangerous Intersections
According to 2016 data, these intersections were among those where many accidents and deaths occurred:
- SR 595 (Rainbow Blvd) & Alta
- 215 & Lone Mountain
- SR 596 (Jones Blvd) & West Oakey
- 15 North & US 95 North
- SR 589 (Sahara Ave) & Teddy Dr
Areas with a high volume of injuries or fatalities tend to share several qualities:
- Areas where speeding is more likely, such as highways, state routes and interstates
- Areas of high traffic, such as interstate exits and major intersections
- Areas with higher populations, such as near apartment complexes and houses
- Areas lacking designated crosswalks or adequate signage denoting pedestrian presence
Sometimes an accident has everything to do with the driver: driving while distracted, speeding or driving recklessly, or environmental hazards. More rarely, pedestrians and other commuters contribute. Either way, a serious car accident is life-altering for everyone involved.
Remaining Safe on the Road
- Seat belts: In 2016, not wearing a seat belt contributed to 56 fatalities in Las Vegas. Wearing one is among the simplest ways to reduce the risk of serious injury or death.
- Pedestrians: In 2016, 57 pedestrians were killed in Las Vegas. Use designated crossings, cross at the proper time, and don't cross while distracted or intoxicated. See our pedestrian accident page.
- Impaired driving: In 2016, driving under the influence was responsible for 48 fatalities in Las Vegas. Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. See our DWI accident page.
- Distraction: Keep your full attention on the road and limit distractions from phones, radios and other occupants. See our distracted driving page.
